Bob Barker Needs Your Help!
 Bob Barker
Bob Barker is a very sweet and gentle soul. Those of you who look at the Web site often may remember seeing him, but we had to take him off the "adoptable dogs" page because he has been so sick.
Bob came to us several months ago from the city shelter. It was obvious he had been an outside and neglected dog, and we weren't surprised to learn that he was also heartworm positive. On top of that, he came down with a terrible respiratory infection and was sick for weeks. When he was well enough, he was treated for the heartworms.
While we cared for him and waited for him to start feeling better, he became even more ill, having difficulty breathing and coughing all the time. He then had several very scary episodes during which he passed out when he exerted himself even just a little. We weren't sure whether he would be able to keep going, but the look in his lovely, big brown eyes and his wagging tail told us he wanted to live, so we promised him that we would do our best to help him.
After many rounds of antibiotics and other medications resulted in little improvement in his condition, it was eventually determined that Bob has pulmonary hypertension. This condition developed because his lungs were so compromised by the effects of heartworm treatment on his system. It seemed that we were running out of options, but Bob’s veterinarians recommended putting him on several medications, one of which is… Viagra.
We had never heard of such a thing but decided to give it a try. (Imagine the looks we get when we go to the pharmacy to pick up a prescription of Viagra for Bob Barker!) Since starting the medications for his heart, Bob has shown significant improvement. He is able to breathe much easier and definitely has more energy and stamina.
He will need to be on Viagra for at least 4 months, which should allow his lungs time to heal and reduce the stress on his heart. This is where Bob needs your help. He requires 15 Viagra tablets a month (which we quarter). The cost of this medication alone is $195.00 per month. Bob would be very grateful if you could make a donation to his Viagra fund! This medication is truly keeping him alive, and he so enjoys his life now.
Donating is easy and you can feel good knowing that your help will give this most wonderful little dog the chance to recover and to be adopted into a loving home! If you could meet Bob, you would quickly realize he is an exceptional little guy, very special and one of the sweetest dogs we've ever known.
Please help Bob Barker!

Dear Lil' Paws Friends,
As 2007 comes to an end, we want to say thank you for all of your generosity & support. This year has had its challenges, but with your help, we saw it through.
We are pleased to say that we have successfully placed 214 dogs into loving, permanent homes this year. We have been able to save dogs that otherwise would not have had a second chance due to old age, illness, blindness, etc… While we are so proud, it has also left us with a hefty outstanding balance at our veterinarian’s office.
We have come up with a "Clean up for 2007" campaign. Our goal is to raise $6,000 by the end of the year to pay off the remainder of our medical bills. We would love to enter 2008 debt free!
As the holidays grow near, think about making a donation in someone's name. It's a wonderful way to remember your loved ones, help homeless dogs, and reduce shopping stress!
Giving is easy. Either make a donation via PayPal or via check.
Thanks for making 2007 such a success. We look forward to having the opportunity to rescue even more dogs in 2008! Best wishes to all for a happy holiday season & a prosperous New Year.

11/27/07–Update from Charity!
Hi! This is Charity and I am borrowing my foster's mom laptop to write you an update on my progress since coming to Lil' Paws Maltese Rescue.
I am feeling much better since I had my surgery and being spayed! As for my heart murmur, my wonderful doc currently has me on Lotensin and seems to be working great! For my arthritis, Doc Lewis has me on Cosequin – which is amazing! I am enjoying walking around now where as before I could not even hold my legs up long enough to take a step. I have even been caught walking up the doggy stairs to the couch! (Foster mom didn't think I knew how to do that – and I really didn't want her to know yet either! Haha!)
I am a very happy elderly lady and enjoy the good life. I have plenty of food to eat when I want it and all the water I can consume. I have my foster mom fooled a little bit into thinking that she has to take me everywhere she goes – and she does! I am getting out seeing the world finally. I guess after all those years of being cooped up are finally paying off for me.
Even though I love my foster mom and we dote on each other constantly, I would like to find a home of my own eventually. I must have someone that is like me – I want someone that just likes to hang out on the couch – someone that wouldn't mind carrying me around some – someone that will let me sleep with them – and of course someone to spoil me and dress me in dress and fix my hair. (I love clothes!)
I would also like to THANK of all of my supporters! If it was not for all of you I would not be feeling like a spring chicken like I do now! Thank you!
– Charity :-)
Charity is a 5 lb., 11-year-old Maltese that was dropped in the night box at the local shelter with a note from her previous owners requesting euthanasia. Lil' Paws intervened and took her into our organization, where her first stop before going to her new foster home was to Animal Trustees of Austin.
After her assessment by Dr. K. Lewis, she was prepped and in emergency surgery within 30 minutes. Charity was diagnosed with Pyometra, which is a serious uterine infection that is potentially fatal and can occur in unspayed animals.
Not only was Charity diagnosed with Pyometra, but also with a heart murmur (grade 5). She is now taking medication for this condition as well.
Charity would not walk when her foster mom first took her home after surgery but now… she is walking around and feeling much better! Charity is a very sweet little girl that still has a lot of life left in her. She LOVES to talk to her foster mom and tell her what she wants… she is a little Diva!
Lil' Paws is in need of monetary donations to help pay for Charity's medical bills. We are a non-profit organization where all donations are tax-deductible. All donations are very much appreciated.
